The life cycle of books and trees; cultural appropriation; what makes a good fight scene; acquisitions insight; contentious industry buyouts & policies; literary obits; + a lemony tea.
Spring is such a season of hope! I'm hoping along with you that you see both creative and vegetal fruit this year! (Also, major props for finishing revisions during the pandemic. I'm in that process as well, and it's SO HARD.)
I loved the story. I've had a similar experience, here in Austin, TX, trying to grow a lemon tree. And I've had a similar experience with finding an agent and then failing to find a publisher. It sounds like you've got a great plan for your book search. I ended up parting ways with my agent, and now I have an EXCELLENT editor who is helping make my memoir better and helping me find a new agent. Anyway - I just wanted to say hello from a random person you don't know/fellow author/fellow tree-grower :-) All the best, and thanks for your newsletter!
Our local nursery had some sweet little lemon trees that may have inspired my path to fruit tree ownership. I had this grand vision of keeping it potted indoors in the winter and decorating it and putting it outside in summer, like my uncle does with his miniature orange tree. But going from killing most houseplants to owning an (expensive and finicky) lemon tree seemed like a big leap. Took me a few more years to commit to trying to grow a fruit tree outdoors, in the dirt!
(There's actually a charming picture book called "When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree" that I highly recommend!)
So glad to hear you've found great support in making your memoir into exactly what you wish it to be. Sending lots of good querying vibes! And thanks so much for reading!

Thanks Julie! Revisions are always a beast, but especially now. Wishing you lots of luck!!
First, best of luck in placing your book! And yes, I did very little last year too. Love your little peach tree. May it gift you a sweet harvest.
Thanks Valerie! Sending creative vibes your way for any 2021 projects you’re germinating!
